PLAQUE OF THE FIRST BURIAL

Established in the second half of the 19th century, the General Cemetery of Reus was inaugurated in 1870. This site marks the location of the first burial, which took place on 2 January 1871.

The cemetery was made possible by the generous legacy of lawyer and politician Josep Sardà i Cailà, who dedicated a significant portion of his estate to its construction. The original design features a square layout, with a service building on the southern side and several rows of burial spaces. The interior is divided into two symmetrical halves, with a central pathway lined by notable mausoleums and pantheons that reflect a specific historical period of Reus.

In addition to the main mausoleum area, the cemetery also includes niches and mass graves. Managed by the Municipal Funeral Services of Reus and Baix Camp, the cemetery has expanded over the years, now covering over 7 hectares. The recent northern expansion includes a new section defined by a row of chapels, gradually establishing additional burial blocks.
