TOMB OF THE HONORABLE MR. JOSEP LAPORTE SALAS
Graduating in 1945, he became a professor of pharmacology at the medical faculties of Cádiz, Valencia, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he also served as rector from 1976 to 1980. He held the presidency of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands from 1970 to 1974, as well as the eleventh Congress of Doctors and Biologists of the Catalan Language held in Reus in 1980. Additionally, he presided over the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia and the Board of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau from 1993 to 2002.
Specializing in drug addiction, he authored the book Les drogues (1976). His political career included serving as a deputy for Convergència i Unió in the Parliament of Catalonia, Minister of Health from 1980 to 1988, Minister of Education from 1988 to 1992 for the Generalitat, and commissioner for Universities and Research from 1992 to 1995.
Among his many accolades, he received the Jaume I Honor Prize and the Anales de Medicina y Cirugía Prize from the Royal Academy of Medicine of Barcelona in 1996. In July 2002, he was elected president of the Institute of Catalan Studies.
